Foster Township Firefighters were called to
assist Freeland Fire at this structure fire in the 1100 block of Centre
Street just after 4 am on Friday, May 1, 2009. This two-alarm fire
destroyed one home and fire/smoke damage to a second. A strong
gusty wind pushed the fire from the fully involved structure into the
exposure. Firefighters from several regional departments fought
the blaze. The wind was strong enough to carry embers over a block
away, where it started a small brush fire, which was quickly
extinguished. Freeland Fire is the Fearnots neighboring company.
The departments work together by having a joint dispatch agreement with
each other for structure fires.

Firefighters
responded to this structure fire just before 1 am on Sunday, April 5,
2009. First arriving firefighters found the fire already though
the roof on their arrival. An aggressive interior attack was
preformed by members of White Haven Fire and Foster Township Fire.
The fire was quickly knocked down and brought under control in
approximately 25 minutes. A second alarm water supply had been
called, but was cancelled when the fire was knocked down. Members
of the Dennison Township Fire Department responded with their tanker and
also used an engine to set up a fill site. The female occupant of
the residence was home when the fire was discovered and was taken to a
local hospital for evaluation. The house has substantial fire
damage to the roof area, but the living area only received fire damage.
FIRE ATTACK SYNOPSIS White Haven Engine was first to arrive on the
scene and immediately deployed an 1 3/4 attack line to the rear.
The attack crew made entry though a rear patio door and advanced the
line to the bathroom. Crews began pulling the ceiling and observed
a heavy fire condition in the attic. A second 1 3/4 line was
deployed though the front door. A portable pond was established in
front of the residence and supplied White Haven Engine 61.
Dennison Township Engine established a fill site at a hydrant in White
Haven. Dennison Township tanker and Foster Township tanker
shuttled water to the scene. In the initial stages of the fire a
second alarm water supply was called for, but cancelled a short time
thereafter when it was determined that an adequate water supply could be
handled by the 2 tankers on scene. Firefighters also opened the roof to
assist with ventilation.
White Haven EMS treated and transported the patient. Additional
manpower from Freeland's ladder assisted with manpower and provided
salvage operations.

majority of the direct fire damage to the first floor kitchen and rear

exertion illness and was taken to Hazleton General Hospital as a
precaution. He was treated and released. An investigation in
conjunction with the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal's division

FIRE ATTACK
SYNOPSIS
Foster Township Engine 1 (Engine 48) laid a 5 inch supply line from a hydrant
approximately 200 feet east of the residence. 2, 1 3/4 attack
lines were deployed from Engine 1, one to the fire building, the second
to the exposure. Freeland Engine 1 (Engine 54) laid a 5 inch
supply line from a hydrant approximately 600 feet west of the residence.
That supply line was pumped by Foster Tanker into Engine 54.
Engine 54 deployed a 3 inch set back line with a 2 inch preconnect line
to supplement the other lines in service.
Firefighters conducted roof ventilation at the peak of the primary
structure and also on the roof of a rear addition. The building
had additions added and was also remodeled in the past. To despite
the appearance of an entry way, the rear and side doors had been removed
and a window put in it's place. There was no door access to the
side or rear of the structure.
During the initial fire attack an additional call reporting a brush fire
in the Hickory Hills Development was received. That call was
handled by the White Haven Fire Company and determined to be minor in
nature.

used by the quarry.
